In this concise article, Harvard Business Review contributor Roger Martin makes an important distinction: "Strategy is not planning. It is the making of an integrated set of choices that collectively position the firm in its industry so as to create sustainable advantage . . . and deliver superior financial returns." Answering the following key questions forms the basis for creating one strategy and a set of supporting initiatives that really make sense and are likely to produce the desired result: "What is our winning aspiration?  Where will we play? How will we win? What capabilities need to be in place? What management systems must be instituted?"
